Last week was all about reviewing the previous two shows to make the next show – which will be taped for cable – better. The producers and reporters watched the second show together. We discovered that if each person thinks of each show as their own, the more likely it is for each person to work that much harder on their piece. We also discovered that correcting little errors could make a big difference and the make the show more polished.
The reporters listened to a speaker while the producers reviewed the first show. Much of the producer’s night was figuring out what the next show – cable show – will look like.
We narrowed down the good and bad, we cut stories out of the rundown and inserted new ones that would make the cable show a success. We were ultimately aiming for a well-thought out show. Fluidity between each piece was a major goal.
Part of accomplishing this was determining which packages were going into the next show then assigning each producer to write a reader that related to the overall topic of the package. We decided to each write an additional reader and use some of the readers and VOs from the past two shows so we’ll have a variety of short pieces to choose from.
Although we weren’t in class as long as usual, it felt like we were. It did take a big chunk of time and a lot of work just to plan out the next show. I’d say planning the show is more strenuous than carrying it out.
Nonetheless, I’m super excited for the next show. I’m confident in my fellow producers and reporters that this show will be gradually better than the last. Get your DVRs ready, the next Metro Minutes show will be one you don't want to miss.
