Closed Curtains

Last Thursday was a sad, but happy day. It was our last taping of Metro Minutes for the semester. It was a bitter sweet day.

The last show made it official that we had finished all of our projects and we’d be done with classes for a while. Everyone was in a good mood. There were a lot of laughs and reminiscing. It was a day of work and play.

I and one of my fellow classmates and producers had to get our packages approved for the show before taping began. The last show was also a cable show. We were constantly running from the editing suite to the producer’s classroom plugging stories in the run down and making slight changes in our packages. The editing suite was jam-packed with people. Since it was the last show, everyone was on a tight deadline to finish whatever they were working on because they wanted to be done.

Although it was a relaxed class, many of us were stressing because we had to put the final touches on our packages.

Everybody was anxious to get out of class. Even though it didn’t seem like it, we finished taping in record time. Out of all the shows we taped this semester, I think the reporters and producers collaborated more on the last show. We mingled before and after class. It was a good ending to a great semester in Metro Minutes.

I met some really cool and driven people with great futures ahead of them. It felt good to share the same passion with some of my fellow classmates. I’m sad our Metro Minutes profiles have to leave the journalism hallway, but I will remember this semester, my classmates and my professors who made my first year in grad school worth it.

The encouragement and critique’s I’ve gotten have made me a better writer and reporter. I have even gotten some great tips about editing! I know that because of Metro Minutes and the instructors who work directly with students in the class, I have a chance to work in this industry and do a good job.
So, thank you Metro Minutes!
